Most turmeric supplements start with one familiar root: yellow turmeric, or Curcuma longa. It is bright orange, rich in curcumin, and widely used in curries, golden lattes, and curcumin capsules.
White turmeric is different.
Known scientifically as Curcuma zedoaria, white turmeric belongs to the same botanical genus but has a distinct identity. Its flesh is pale, its aroma is sharper, and its taste is more bitter and camphor-like than spicy. More importantly, it contains a different set of active compounds. White turmeric is harder to reduce to a single number. Its active compounds are less familiar, and its benefits require a more nuanced explanation. As a result, most turmeric products followed the same route: more curcumin, higher standardisation, and similar positioning.
That created a crowded category where many products compete on the same root and the same compound.
